sessions are interactive and feature easy exercises (using the open
A-string and the G-major scale in session 1!). Handouts will be
provided for all sessions. Bring your instrument!
Goals of the Workshop
include:
- Introduction to beginning jazz improvisation
- Experiencing success through improvisation
- Dissemination of specific exercises in a successful proven sequence
- Demonstrating jazz improvisation is only appropriate for students at
all ages and levels
- Demonstrating how applicable jazz improvisation is to string players
- Highlighting how improvisation can be used as a vehicle to introduce
divergent thinking into performance
Beginning Jazz
Improvisation in the Classroom Grades 5-8
Participatory presentation based on the Jazz Fiddle Wizard Jr.
series. The session draws analogies between language and improvising
and demonstrates how to introduce improvising into the middle school
classroom.
"How Was My Solo?" -
Methods for Evaluating Improvisation
Beginning improvisers can still incorporate advanced story-telling
devices such as space, speed, register and complexity. The clinician
will demonstrate how these devices, converted to evaluation criteria,
produce successful solos.
Essential solo techniques
for high school students
In high school you can introduce very easy chord theory that will
teach the students how to find the inner melodies and basic scales in
a jazz chart. The session will also cover how to memorize tunes by
singing the melody of the root movement.
Turning your orchestra
into a jazz string big band
Reading session featuring arrangements (ASTA grade 1.5 - 3.5) that
include improvised solo sections. Issues such as conducting jazz,
singing jazz rhythms, correcting bowings and shaping jazz lines are
covered.
