$2000 and under

Our ability to find excellent value for beginners is most evident in this range, which includes some of our most popular instruments. Our latest discovery is Geoffrey Chi, a Beijing maker whose wonderful instruments are rapidly changing minds about Chinese instruments.Rudoulf Doetsch violins and violas are used by many of the best students because of their rich tone and attractive appearance. We also have Ivan Dunov violins and violas that are a little more affordable. We guarantee you will be impressed! The new instruments come with a case and bow included in the price. The older instruments are more rare and the bow and case are purchased separately.

FRACTIONAL INSTRUMENTS

We have a small number of antique French and German instruments available. Please contact us with your needs to find out about our current stock.

For more affordable fractional size violins and cellos we recommend our Chi, Doetsch and Klier instruments from 1/8 to 3/4 size. They range in price from $750 to $2,500 and you may trade up to the next size as you advance.

FRACTIONAL VIOLAS

For younger players wanting to start on viola rather than switching after starting on violin, we select particularly dark sounding violins from our Doestch and Klier instruments. Prices and trade-in arrangements are identical to the fractional violins by these makers. Call for availability, as they are somewhat scarce.

BOWS

We are always on the lookout for bows that give you high quality at a good price. You may know the names of some of these makers, and others may be new, but they all consistently play very well and are great value. Many people fail to realize the impact that a bow has on the tone of a violin, viola, or cello. We like to say that for every $100 extra you spend on a bow, you would need to spend $500 extra on the instrument to get the same sort of improvement in tone. After all, the bow is the only thing that touches the strings to make the instrument sing. Heifetz used to say that without the bow the violin is just a funny-looking mandolin.

Modern Bows of Good Quality

We offer nickel silver mounted pernambuco wood bows in the approximate range of $300-$600. Included in this category are bows by Schicker, Seifert, F.W.Hantel, W.R. Schuster, Kramer, and others. Silver mounted pernambuco wood bows in this range start at about $500 and go up to a little over $1000 and include bows by Schicker, Seifert, F.W.Hantel, W.R. Schuster, Kramer, and Francois Mouton among others.

At the present time we are still evaluating composite bows made of modern materials, like Coda bows and other similar products. We would appreciate knowing your opinion about these new products. Please e-mail us at music@liviolinshop.com.

Finer Quality Bows

Our stock of finer bows includes modern and antique bows of French, English, American, and German origin. We have bows by makers such as John Norwood Lee, Henri Mouret, Douglas Raguse, and Roger Zabinski in stock, with silver as well as gold mountings.
