Advanced Cellos

It can take many years, often a decade or longer, before a cellist attains such a level of proficiency with their instrument that an upgraded cello that’s capable of greater versatility is required. An advanced cello is often needed because as the player’s experience continues to grow, many new and difficult techniques will be introduced that an intermediate cello is simply not capable of accommodating.

Advanced cellos are better able to respond to a variety of different bow strokes, thus allowing the instrument to produce a wider dynamic range, more powerful projection, and higher aesthetic qualities. From advanced students performing in their first competition to cellists beginning their post-secondary level studies, the best advanced cello can help them achieve their goals and give them the room they need to continue to learn.

Best Cellos for Advanced Players

The Long Island Violin Shop is the #1 source for all things strings in the Northeast. With an impressive selection of the best cellos for advanced players, we are the place to find your next instrument. Our team of skilled luthiers, talented musicians, and premier instructors are committed to ensuring every cellist has access to the highest quality instruments and accessories, regardless of their skill level.

For most cellists, their advanced cello will be the instrument that they will play for most of their learning lives because the next step up is a professional cello. At the Long Island Violin Shop, our advanced cellos are hand-made with well-aged wood and professionally set up right here in our studio. Your new instrument is designed to play exceptionally well and stay in tune. This is essential because a quality sound will encourage you to play more. And the more you play your cello, the better you’ll get.

Our advanced cellos are what you need to keep growing as a musician. This impressive instrument delivers a clean, open sound and a broader platform to explore your skills with fewer of the constraints commonly found in less responsive instruments.

When you put your trust in the Long Island Violin Shop, you have our word that we’ll do everything we can to help you feel confident in your purchase and find an instrument you'll love playing for years to come. Call our retail store at (855) 343-3535 and our staff of players and luthiers will help guide you to finding the perfect instrument for you.

Beginner Cellos in Long Island, NY

Whether you are a beginner cellist or revisiting the instrument after a long break, selecting the right beginner cello will make all the difference in the world when starting out on your musical journey. Taking the time to choose the right starter cello can’t be stressed enough because if the instrument doesn’t fit your body or playing style, you will be less likely to continue with your lessons. And with so much joy waiting for you in this instrument, you don’t want to give up on your dream of mastering the cello too early.

Starter Cellos

At the Long Island Violin Shop, we firmly believe that starting out with the right instrument helps eliminate many of the hurdles that might otherwise derail your musical journey. Our team is committed to helping you learn to love the cello as much as we do. Our skilled luthiers go above and beyond to provide each customer with a personalized shopping experience, including offering expert advice to help match you with a beginner cello that you’ll enjoy playing for years to come.

Our starter cellos are handmade and selected to meet your specific needs. Our professional luthiers spend hours going over every detail to ensure your beginner cello can provide you with the ease of playability, beautifully rich resonance, and tonal depth you love and expect from this classical stringed instrument.

Cellos for Beginners

While our staff is always on hand to help you find the right cello for your needs, knowing what to look for in a good-quality beginner cello before you start looking is also beneficial. The best starter cello is one that feels comfortable and easy to play, and offers a full, balanced tone. It should be made from solid carved wood, and high-quality materials that allow it to produce a robust, beautiful sound.

Even though an instrument is considered a starter cello, everything should work as intended. For instance, the pegs should hold their tune yet allow you to easily change strings when necessary. The fine tuners should operate smoothly, and the endpin should hold its position without being too heavy. The bridge should be perfectly fit to your cello, not too thick or too thin, and have proper curvature on top. Lastly, the height of the bridge and nut, as well as the shape of the fingerboard, should be properly in-line to make playing the instrument easier and more enjoyable for the beginner.

The Long Island Violin Shop will gladly help you select the starter cello that best meets your current needs and budget as well as your future goals. We offer a range of high-quality cellos for beginners as well as all the accessories you’ll ever need to enjoy your new instrument to the fullest. We even offer in person and virtual cello lessons taught by local cellists.

Need help finding that perfect starter cello? Call our retail store at (855) 343-3535 and our staff of players and luthiers will help guide you to finding the perfect instrument for you.

Carbon Fiber Viola Bows

Viola bows have traditionally been made from wood because up until recently, it was the only material available that was suitable for the job. But today’s manufacturers are taking modern viola bows to the next level by using carbon fiber to make resilient bows that are capable of producing wood-like results.

Carbon fiber viola bows are made from synthetic hair-like fibers that are fused together to form the body of the bow. Once made, a carbon fiber viola bow won’t expand or contract with temperature fluctuations like a wood bow does. It is also resistant to warping, and it is so strong that it won’t snap easily at the tip or break when in the hands of a younger player.

The amazing thing about carbon fiber viola bows is that they offer the player many of most important characteristics that they look for in a bow, such as flexibility, durability, and a lightweight body but without the maintenance needs and climate considerations wood bows demand. And they can usually do so at a substantially lower price point in some cases, making them a very good value for the money.

Carbon Fiber Viola Bows

For someone being introduced to the viola for the first time, choosing a carbon fiber bow can sometimes be the right choice because carbon fiber is virtually unbreakable. It’s also not uncommon for more advanced musicians to have both a wooden bow and a carbon fiber one, so they can choose the right bow for any situation.

When choosing a carbon fiber bow, whether it is going to be your go-to bow or your back-up, it is important to remember that even though different bows may look similar, they can play and sound very differently. From how the bow flows across the strings to the sounds it can produce to how it feels in your hand, these are traits that can only be discovered by playing your viola using different carbon fiber bows. Like your viola, the bow you choose is an investment in your musical journey. So, you want to make sure you choose the right bow for your skill level and expectations.

At The Long Island Violin Shop, you have our word that we’ll do everything we can to help you find the best carbon fiber viola bows to help you reach your musical goals. Call our retail store at (855) 343-3535 and our staff of players and luthiers will help guide you to finding the perfect carbon fiber viola bow for you.

Carbon Fiber Violin Bows

Carbon fiber violin bows are a more recently introduced option for violinists to consider when choosing their ideal bows. Unlike wood violin bows, these types of bows are made from synthetic materials. More precisely, they consist of hair-like fibers that are fused together to form the bow.

A violin bow that is made from carbon fiber offers the player most of the unique characteristics that every violinist desires in their bow, such as flexibility, durability, and an impressive lightness. In fact, carbon fiber violin bows can offer many of the same attributes as expensive wood bows but without the maintenance needs and climate considerations a wood bow demands.

Unlike wood, a carbon fiber violin bow won’t expand or contract with temperature fluctuations. It is also resistant to warping, and it is so strong that it won’t snap easily at the tip or break when in the hands of a younger player.

Carbon Fiber Bows for Violins

Because of the steadfastness of carbon fiber violin bows, it is not uncommon for advanced violinists to own both a wood bow and a carbon fiber bow. But for those being introduced to the instrument for the first time, choosing a carbon fiber bow can sometimes make the most sense thanks to the material’s near unbreakable qualities. These bows also present a very good value for the money, as they are usually priced lower than premium wooden bows.

The important thing to remember is that every bow is unique. How it flows across the instrument, the sounds it can produce, and how it feels in your hand can all vary greatly between different bows. The key to finding the perfect carbon fiber violin bow is therefore in comparing them while playing your violin.

Like your violin, the bow you choose is an investment in your musical journey. So, you want to make sure you choose the right bow for your skill level and expectations. When you put your trust in the Long Island Violin Shop, you have our word that we’ll do everything we can to help you find the best carbon fiber violin bows for your goals. Call our retail store at (855) 343-3535 and our staff of players and luthiers will help guide you to finding the perfect violin bow for you.

Buy Viola Bows

When you are shopping to buy viola bows, certain things need to be taken into consideration to help ensure that you choose the best bow for your musical journey. From the type of material the bow is made from to how the frog feels in your hand, every part of the bow can impact how you you’re your viola and articulate your musical story. For this reason, we always recommended trying different bows out with your viola to help find your perfect match.

When comparing models, you will most likely discover that some bows are less comfortable to use, while others flow more naturally. Make sure you play both fast and slow pieces because you want to know how the bow responds to accents and dynamics.

Consider the different characteristics of the viola bows as well, such as their weight, balance, and flexibility. Some bows may be too stiff and heavy, whereas others may be too flexible. Try viola bows made from wood as well as carbon fiber, as each can produce sounds differently.

If you are starting out on the viola, then congratulations on taking the first steps in your musical journey. The team at The Long Island Violin Shop can help you find the perfect bow for you. Violin Bow Cases

The bow is an essential part of playing the violin, and like the instrument itself, needs to be protected from accidental damage. A violinist should recognize that their bow as delicate as the violin. Even though the wood used to make bows is hard and durable, there is always a risk of it breaking if the appropriate level of care isn’t used.

To protect your bow when not playing, it should be stored in a quality violin case or a bow case. Leaving the bow out increases the risk of damage to the bow, or of contaminating the hair with oil or grease, requiring a rehair.

Cases for Violin Bow

The Long Island Violin Shop is where you can find everything you need to enjoy playing the violin to the fullest. We not only have an outstanding selection of violins for every skill level, but we also carry everything you need to get the most out of your instrument and to protect it, including premium quality violin bow cases from some of the world’s most trusted manufacturers.

It is important to remember that storing your violin bow in its own case is just one part of the process of protecting this delicate instrument. To ensure that your bow is always ready for your next playing session, follow these steps when using your violin bow case:

  1. Wipe the stick with a clean, dry cloth
  2. Loosen the tension on the hair until it is completely slack.
  3. When placing the bow in the case make sure it is secured with any bow holders, and that all latches are safely closed.

If you want to store your bow long-term, you might consider placing a mothball in the case to protect from moths, which will eat hair, ivory, and tortoiseshell. Wrap the mothball in a tissue and avoid contact with the bow itself. As instruments and bows are sensitive to temperature and humidity, monitor the humidity with a hygrometer, and humidify as needed.

When you buy a case for your violin bow from the LIVS, you can be sure that you’ll be happy with your purchase. Whether you're looking for a case to hold one bow, or many, we've got the options for you.

Need help finding the best violin bow case for your needs? Please call us at (855) 343 - 3535. Our expert staff will ensure that you select the right bow case for your musical journey, and that you are completely satisfied with your purchase.

Wood Viola Bows

To get the absolute most out of your viola you need a high-quality bow that is comfortable and easy to use. But unfortunately, with so many wood viola bows out there to choose from, finding the perfect one isn’t always easy.

But at The Long Island Violin Shop, we not only have one of the best selections of wooden viola bows in the Northeast, but we also have skilled musicians and luthiers who are always on hand to help you whenever you might need it.

Choosing the ideal wooden viola bow for your unique situation all comes down to which one fits your needs and personal preferences best. But that’s not all you need to be considering. You also need to take into account the bow’s weight and feel, the wood it is made from, its shape (round or actagonal), its components, and of course, its price.

Wooden Viola Bows

Two of the most important factors that can affect a bow’s performance are its weight and feel. Some players may prefer a featherlight bow while others may like their bows to have a little more heft to them. Some prefer a perfectly balanced bow while others like the tip to carry a bit of weight. This level of personal preference is why it is always recommended to test out various wood viola bows on your instrument before making your purchasing decision.

The wood that’s used to make the viola bow can also impact how the bow feels and plays. Most wooden violin bows are made from either Pernambuco or Brazilwood. Pernambuco’s unique strength and resilience make it wonderfully responsive to a player’s skills.

Brazilwood, on the other hand, is made from a variety of different tropical wood species. Wood viola bows made from this type of wood tend to a little heavier than those made from Pernambuco.

Of these two materials, a bow made from Pernambuco tends to be more responsive to the vibrations of the viola. Many professional musicians also believe that Pernambuco wood bows can produce richer sounds and allow for more free-flowing performances.

That said, choosing a bow made from Brazilwood can sometimes benefit the beginning player. These bows can still produce a lovely sound, but their heavier weight helps make them more durable, especially when in the hands of young players.

Ultimately, whether you choose a wood viola bow made from Brazilwood or Pernambuco depends on how the bow feels in your hands as you play your instrument. Every player is different and their relationship with their bow is deeply personal. If you need help finding the perfect wood viola bow to suit your skills and personal preferences, call The Long Island Violin Shop at (855) 343-3535 to schedule a visit to our beautiful showroom in Huntington, New York. Our staff of players and luthiers will help guide you to finding the perfect wood viola bows for your needs and budget.

Wood Violin Bows

Many violinists spend their musical journeys using wood violin bows and there’s a reason for that. For starters, violin bows have been traditionally made from wood up until only recently, when carbon fiber and composite bows were introduced as alternatives. So, most players start out using this type of bow.

But what makes so many violinists stay with wood violin bows is that wood is a natural material that can produce more nuanced sounds when in the hands of a skilled violinist. Over time, the player, the bow, and violin form a unique relationship where each one knows how to get the very best out of the other.

For this reason, there are many things to consider when shopping for wooden violin bows. In fact, making your bow selection is just as important a decision as choosing your violin. When you use the right wood violin bow with the right violin, that’s where the magic happens.

Wooden Violin Bows

The first decision you’re going to have to make when choosing your bow is which type of wood you want your bow to be made from. Most wooden violin bows are made from either Pernambuco or Brazilwood.

Pernambuco comes from a tree species in Brazil known as the Caesalpinia echinate tree. It has been used in bow making since the 18th century, when luthiers discovered that this unique type of wood features a high degree of strength and resilience, which combined make it wonderfully responsive to a violinist’s skills.

Brazilwood, on the other hand, is a composite of tropical wood species that are also found in Brazil. Bows made from Brazilwood are typically a bit heavier than those made from Pernambuco, and this extra weight can sometimes lessen the “feel” for the violinist.

Of these two materials, Pernambuco wood bow is more responsive to the vibrations of the violin. It’s these vibrations, which run from the instrument’s strings to the player’s hands, that allow the violinist to become more deeply connected with the violin. It is also a main reason why Pernambuco wood bows are believed to provide richer sounds and more flowing performances.

That said, choosing a bow made from Brazilwood can sometimes benefit the beginning player. These bows can still produce a lovely sound and their heavier weight makes them more durable, especially when in the hands of young players.

Ultimately, whether you choose a wood bow made from Brazilwood or Pernambuco depends on how the bow feels in your hands as you glide it across your violin’s strings. Every player is different and their relationship with their bow is deeply personal. If you need help finding the perfect wood violin bow to suit your skills and personal preferences, call The Long Island Violin Shop at (855) 343-3535 to schedule a visit to our beautiful showroom in Huntington, New York. Our staff of players and luthiers will help guide you to finding the perfect wood violin bows for you.
