Basic Violin, Viola, and Cello Setup and Care

Basic Violin, Viola, and Cello Setup and Care

Proper setup and care are essential for maintaining the sound quality and longevity of your string instrument. Whether you play the violin, viola, or cello, following these guidelines will help keep your instrument in excellent condition.

Setting Up Your Instrument

Assembling the Instrument

It is important to have the proper set up. Work with your teacher to ensure that you have the shoulder rest that works best for you and you are holding your instrument using proper technique. For violins and violas, attach the shoulder rest if you use one. For cellos, extend the endpin to a comfortable playing height. Proper set up and technique will ensure you’re getting the best sound out of your instrument and reducing the chance of injury.

Tuning the Strings

Carefully tune your instrument. If using a tuner or tuning app, check that each string is correctly tuned. Start with the A string and proceed to the D, G, and E strings for violins, or the A, D, G, and C strings for violas and cellos.

Proper Playing Posture

Holding the Instrument

Ensure you are holding your instrument correctly. For violins and violas, rest the instrument on your shoulder and hold it with your chin. For cellos, position the instrument between your knees. The cello should form a diamond between the floor, your knees, and your chest.

Bow Grip

Hold the bow with a relaxed, flexible grip. Ensure your fingers are properly placed on the bow to facilitate smooth and controlled movements. Work with your teacher to ensure that your bow grip is correct.

Daily Maintenance

Cleaning Your Instrument

Wipe down your instrument with a soft, dry cloth after each playing session to remove rosin dust and sweat. Wipe down your strings from the nut to the bridge to remove oils from your hands and excess rosin. Avoid using water or cleaning solutions.

Checking the Bow

Regularly check the bow hair for wear and tear. Rehair the bow when necessary to maintain optimal performance. It is critical that you loosen your bow before you put it into the case. This will extend the life of your bow hair as well as reduce the chance of your bow stick warping.

Regular Care and Upkeep

String Replacement

Replace strings regularly to ensure consistent sound quality. Frequency depends on how often you play, but a general guideline is every 3-6 months.

Bridge and Soundpost Adjustments

Ensure the bridge is properly aligned and the soundpost is correctly positioned. Consult a professional luthier for adjustments if needed.

Humidity Control

Maintain proper humidity levels to prevent your instrument from drying out or swelling. Use a humidifier in dry conditions and a dehumidifier in humid environments. We highly recommend the Boveda as it is inexpensive and will ensure that the proper humidity level is maintained every time you put your instrument away. For best results, keep your case closed while you’re playing, so that the Boveda can do its job.

Long-Term Instrument Care

Storage Tips

Store your instrument in its case when not in use. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Do not leave your cello standing up. It should rest on its side. Even in a case, a cello can be damaged if it should topple over.

Regular Check-Ups

Schedule regular check-ups with a professional luthier to address any potential issues and keep your instrument in optimal condition. We recommend stopping by every 6 – 8 months for a free instrument check.

Seeking Professional Help

Professional Repairs

If you notice any damage or unusual sounds, seek professional repair services immediately. Avoid attempting repairs yourself, as this can cause further damage.
