'Tis the season for Christmas music! Which also means that it's officially the season for discovering great musical covers. In scouring the web (read: Youtube) we've compiled a list of 5 fantastic covers that collectively feature violins, violas, cellos, basses and the occasional piano while reimaginging a Christmas classic.
Carol of the Bells (for 12 Cellos) | The Piano Guys
Rarely ones to disappoint, The Piano Guys have done it again with this rousing 12 cello (one man) rendition of Leontovych's famous carol.
Fairytale of New York | Arco String Quartet Belfast
We couldn't resist sharing this Arco String Quartet Belfast's cover of The Pogues' 1988 pop hit. Who doesn't love a good New York fairytale?
All I Want for Christmas is You | Tiffany Chang and Albert Chang
While some may groan, this couldn't really be a list of Christmas covers if it didn't include a version of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You." We went with this particular cover on the grounds of musical arrangement, clarity and over all "prettiness."
The Christmas Song | Simply Three
We simply fell in love with Simply Three's cover of this Christmas classic. Along with being a great cover musically, it's impossible not to see (and enjoy) how much fun they're having as an ensamble.
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas | Brooklynn Duo
While there may be hundreds of covers of this Christmas classic, we decided to go with Brooklynn Duo's to highlight this pair of talented musicians hailing from our own local New York scene.
